Händel realizó esta adaptación de una oda escrita por el poeta John Dryden para el día de Santa Cecilia de 1697.

La oda describe el festín que Alejandro ofreció en el año 330 a.de c. en la conquista de Persépolis, la obra concluye con la evocación a Santa Cecilia y al poder de la música.
